KU DEBATERS WIN BINGHAMTON TOURNAMENT

LAWRENCE — Two KU Debate teams closed out the championship round of the Phyllis Schatz Invitational Debate Tournament hosted by Binghamton University. The teams of senior Jon Mantis, Glenview, Illinois, with sophomore Alex McCarthy, Lenexa, and senior Ryan Snow, Highlands Ranch, Colorado, with freshman Alex Barreto, Oklahoma City, each advanced to the championship final, leaving the teams as co-champions of the tournament.

The two teams each went 7-1 at the tournament in advancing to the championship. Mantis and McCarthy defeated Baylor University in one semifinal debate while Snow and Barreto beat Binghamton in the other semifinals. All four also won individual speaker awards at the tournament as Mantis was third, McCarthy fourth, Snow fifth and Barreto sixth.

The KU team of senior Azja Butler, Lansing, and sophomore Graham Revare, Shawnee, is competing this week at a round-robin invitational for the top seven teams in the country hosted by the University of Kentucky. The six other schools competing at the Kentucky Run for the Roses are Emory University, Harvard University, the University of Kentucky, the University of Michigan, Northwestern University and the University of Southern California. The duo are in Lexington, Kentucky, for the first in-person debate competition since February 2020.
